The forest was quiet, with only the wind gently stirring the leaves. Somewhere in the distance the laughter of the other hunters could be heard, but here, among the thick grass and twisting roots, there was solitude. Annie walked slowly between the tall stalks of clover, her dark stockings with twinkling stars clinging in places to the thorny blades of grass.
She felt a little dizzy, but it was a familiar sensation. The parasites on her head moved, pulsing subtly, their dark blue bodies glimmering faintly in the gloom of the undergrowth. The girl didn't react, but inhaled deeply, letting the fog in her thoughts dissipate.
- ...And why would I do that? - She muttered quietly to herself, squatting down and pushing the grass apart.
The hunt for the golden clover seemed pointless to her, but it had come nonetheless. Maybe a habit of being where everyone else should be? Or a vague hope for luck? Annie closed her eyes for a second. The wind touched her hair, swept across her shoulders, and in the same instant the parasite on her tail twitched.
She opened her eyes.
Nearby, a faint golden glow flickered beneath a gnarled clover leaf. Succubad reached out slowly, pulled the stalks apart with slightly trembling fingers, and... there it was. A four-leaf clover, shining in the twilight like a tiny star.
She didn't smile, but something inside her trembled, like a warm touch of long-forgotten happiness.
- Found it, - the girl whispered, carefully plucking the find.
In the distance, other Succubuds murmured, but Annie stayed where she was, gazing at the golden leaf in the palm of her hand. Maybe luck was sometimes on her side after all.
